Hurricane Ian comes under category 4 when it hit Florida, the US on Wednesday ie 29th Sep’22. According to National Hurricane Center, it was gradually losing strength as it hit central Florida and was now a Category 1 storm.

Hurricane Ian Track:

  • By late Monday, Ian was moving northwest at 13 mph southeast of the western tip of Cuba.
  • Forecasters expect Hurricane Ian is about to hit Florida’s west coast as early as Wednesday.
  • Cuba said it was evacuating 50,000 people in Pinar del Río province, had sent in medical and emergency personnel and taking steps to protect food and other crops in warehouses.
  • The centre of the hurricane passed west of the Cayman Islands on Monday with minimum damage.
  • Ian will slow down and move towards the north on Thursday, according to the National Hurricane Center.
  • The centre of the storm will pass over central Florida on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, and emerge over the western Atlantic by late Thursday according to the hurricane centre.
  • Ian will exit Florida’s east coast by Thursday and after that enter the Atlantic Ocean before heading north into South Carolina and making a second landfall Friday afternoon.

Hurricane Ian’s catastrophic effects on Florida:

  • Florida Governor declared a state of emergency for all of Florida over the weekend.
  • Florida’s southwestern coast had received its first direct hit from a hurricane since 1921.
  • According to National Weather Service, Ian’s hit may result in a storm surge of up to 18 feet
  • They are possible chances of tornadoes too.
  • Ian is among the most powerful storms to strike the United States in decades
  • Meteorologists have said flash flooding is possible in the Florida peninsula as per BBC.
  • Affected areas will get 12 to 25 inches of rain.
  • This hit had knocked out power to more than 2 million people.
  • Ian could cost the property-insurance industry billions in claims, based on early hypothetical figures by risk-modelling firms, while the total economic losses would be much higher

Hurricane Ian hit Cuba and left it in the dark:

  • Ian hit Cuba as one of the major hurricanes in history.
  • It’s knocked out power to the entire country.
  • Evacuation orders have been issued for people in coastal communities, mobile homes and low-lying areas in 12 counties.
  • Two people were dead and buildings were damaged nationwide.
  • Forecasters had warned that some regions of Cuba could see up to 30cm (12in) of rain under Hurricane Ian.
