Story Plot
Kantor and Twohey reported in October 2017 that Harvey Weinstein had allegedly sexually harassed, intimidated, abused, and raped women for at least thirty years. Using his position of power as a film producer, he abused women and then forced them to remain silent about what they had gone through. Over 80 women accused him of rape and/or sexual harassment. He got arrested in May of this year. He was found guilty of rape and a criminal sexual act between February and March 2020 and sentenced to 23 years in prison.
She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Penguin Press’s Movement on September 10, 2019. Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey wrote the book to recount the enormous amount of work that went into the report that exposed Harvey Weinstein’s attempts to pay off the women he’d assaulted. The book, on which the film She Said is based, details the investigative process and the difficulties the reporters faced. These difficulties included defining sexual harassment and convincing women who had been intimidated into silence to speak out. Kantor and Twohey also faced formidable obstacles from Hollywood gatekeepers, who made every step of the investigation difficult, if not impossible. Finally, the book focuses on the gritty, real work of destabilizing the systems that protect predators like Weinstein.
