A parallel hybrid vehicle is a car that uses both a gasoline engine and an electric motor to save fuel and reduce emissions. It combines the benefits of both engines to make the car more efficient.
What is the Parallel Hybrid Vehicle?
A parallel hybrid vehicle is a type of hybrid electric vehicle that combines an internal combustion engine and an electric motor to power the vehicle. In a parallel hybrid system, both the engine and the electric motor can work together to drive the wheels, or the electric motor can power the vehicle on its own.
How Parallel Hybrid Vehicle Work?
A parallel hybrid system has an engine, transmission, electric motor, motor controller, and a battery that work together to power the car. It has two drive systems – one for the engine and one for the electric motor – for improved efficiency. The engine and motor, either together or individually, provide the vehicle’s driving force. The two sets of power systems can cooperate or operate independently to move the vehicle. The two power systems in a parallel hybrid vehicle operate simultaneously, achieving power connection mechanically. This type of hybrid vehicle is called a parallel hybrid because of the parallel flow of power.
Fundamentals Of Parallel Hybrid Vehicle
There are two basic fundamental modes.
- In a hybrid vehicle, when the car is travelling at high speeds, climbing hills, or accelerating quickly, the battery-motor system primarily powers the car and the internal combustion engine only kicks in.
- In the motor-assisted hybrid mode, the internal combustion engine primarily powers the vehicle and the motor only kicks in during two specific states.
Advantages Of Parallel Hybrid Vehicle
- There is no energy conversion and minimal energy loss because the engine’s power may be used directly to propel the vehicle.
- The motor can serve as a generator as well as a means of propulsion, using less energy overall and lowering costs.
Disadvantage Of Parallel Hybrid Vehicle
- The traditional mechanical connection between an engine and the driving wheels in a car limits the engine’s ability to perform at its best, as it can’t always operate at its most efficient point. This affects its fuel consumption and power performance. It must have a transmission and can accommodate an automated transmission
- There is little mixing, which makes the switch to plug-in hybrids difficult.
